Yes, we ask you to donate today. Here’s why: Rachel Carson Homestead in Springdale, PA is the only place not just named after Rachel Carson, but fully dedicated to her history and legacy. This is the most authentic and significant historical connection to Rachel and her family.
People from around the world come to her house in Springdale, Pennsylvania to step inside the house and walk the stairs she walked, look out her window, and see the view she had. Though the neighborhood has changed and modifications have been made, the house remains intact. There is no substitute for an actual visit.
But, a house over 160 years old doesn’t age gracefully on its own. A few years of neglect took its toll, and several years ago, when a visitor from Germany looked in, he said – with shock and dismay, “So this is what Pittsburgh thinks of Rachel Carson?” It would have been too embarrassing to say we had already made some improvements.
Naming a bridge after this visionary heroine doesn’t have the same import as honoring Rachel Carson’s original home, the site where she spent her formative years.
Help the small nonprofit volunteer board committed to stewarding the house. Help bring it to the next stage of restoration. Help fund development of educational programs for on-site and outreach delivery. Show that you appreciate Rachel Carson’s contributions to us – donate today! And let’s talk about joining a working committee…
