Piano in Carson Parlor

This page under construction, … but meanwhile, here are the basics:

The Rachel Carson Homestead is THE AUTHENTIC location for learning about Rachel’s early life. She was born in the humble house where the springhouse which was the source of water for the Carson family remains…

One of the RCH assets is a fan coral, collected by adult Rachel and donated by the late Shirley Briggs, Rachel’s USFWS colleague who visited Hawk Mt. with Rachel, was an early member of the RCHA, and began the Rachel Carson History Project, which evolved into the Rachel Carson Council.

Another major asset of RCH is an 1869 Steinway square grand piano. This is the same model and style owned by Rachel’s mother, Maria Fraser McLean Carson. The piano was a major source of family entertainment as well as a source for income – Maria provided music lessons to students in the neighborhood. The original piano remained in the house through ownership of Miss Angeline Sobor, who documented artifacts. That piano was damaged over decades of neglect, and RCH was fortunate to obtain another that is suitable for restoration. Sponsors for the restoration are welcome to inquire for more details via email.
