In honor of Rachel Carson’s birthday anniversary, we invite you to stream a the story of a Carson contemporary in the environmental movement.
A quintessential voice for Nature, Rachel Carson brought fundamental ecological concepts to the public in an easily understood form. In 1962, her book Silent Spring called for a change in mass pesticide use, and most importantly, in how we regard our natural world and our place in it.
Carson is considered the inspiration or mother of the contemporary environmental movement. Her early connection to the outdoors, early conservation writers, and “all of nature” continued throughout her life.
Today we consider another environmental icon who helped to develop environmentalism: David Brower. During Carson’s lifetime, Brower’s love for nature and the outdoors led him to develop into an environmental activist. Like Carson, Brower was an author who inspired and energized while informing the public. This weekend of Rachel Carson’s memorial birthday, we offer a film about Brower’s legacy with an invitation for you to consider the complementary roles and legacies of these “voices for Nature.”
