Penn State University students from various campuses in Southwest PA celebrated the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday as a Day of Service, including at the Rachel Carson Homestead. Restoration Projects
The new roof was finished in 2018 and should last for DECADES! We’re grateful the old one held out. We also have a new “classroom” and trail signs. A restored front porch completed in 2023 has taken us another step closer to making this landmark a destination deserving of Rachel Carson’s name. Take a look!
Rachel’s Birthday
We normally celebrate this anniversary at Rachel Carson’s birthplace when possible. This is where she discovered her sense of wonder and began to develop her environmental ethic. It’s difficult to imagine the world without the legacy of Rachel Carson.
Time to spruce-up…
There’s always something to do! If you are in the area, we welcome people like YOU to help with seasonal projects at the Rachel Carson Homestead. If you have “spare” time or money, you can help on-site, with sponsorships, or to consider certain in-kind donations. . With hearty thanks!
New W. PA Girl Scout badge
A Girl Scout badge available in the Western PA area honors the legacy of Rachel Carson. The RC Homestead welcomes visits by scouts, schools, and adult organizations. Please contact us to schedule a visit with your group. We appreciate your interest and look forward to your visit.
Rachel Carson Council – an All

The Rachel Carson Council, founded in 1965, is the national environmental organization envisioned by Rachel Carson to carry on her work after her death. We promote Carson’s ecological […]

And, of course, to all those who stopped by – including out-of-town and first-time visitors. This year we had a performer, Joyce Rouse, who, while “teaching important concepts about sustainability, recycling, and eco-spirituality, Earth […]
Pittsburgh Artifact
Check out Pittsburgh Magazine‘s article A History of Pittsburgh in 50 Artifacts. We have uncovered some additional artifacts – notes and drawings from a young Rachel. They would make a unique display. A conservationist reviewed our materials and gave some guidance. Donations to help purchase materials for archiving and a proper display are appreciated. You […]
