Homestead Restoration

February 1, 2017 Written by rch

The Homestead Restoration began several years ago, when worn siding was replaced with reclaimed wood, and original doors and windows were repaired or re-milled. A new grant will allow the restoration to continue this year starting with replacement of the roof.

The Rachel Carson Homestead is registered as a National Historic Site and with the Pittsburgh History and Landmark Foundation, but does not receive federal funding. The Rachel Carson Homestead Association is responsible for restoration, maintenance, and general repairs.

A new vision for the grounds was designed and implemented in 2015: the criteria are attractive, non-invasive, low-maintenance, and pollinator-friendly specimens.

Long-term plans include a visitor and education center.
